Forests – Trees
- 23 % of land is covered by forests.
- In 1998 roughly 17 % of wood from the world's logging was used for making paper.
- 120 000 km2 of forests are lost every year which is like the area of the Scotland, wales, North Ireland and
944 football pitches
- Today there is only less than half of tropical forests left, it's less than 7% of land
- Trees and virgin forests in the equatorial zones influence climate greatly on the whole of Planet Earth
- The biggest area is taken up by virgin forest in Amazonia, the Congo basin and on the south-west islands of Asia
Reasons for forests’ devastation:
- man wants still more and more wood
- Mostly virgin forests are devastated because of logging or exploitation, because of stock raising and the
production of comercial food on plantations
- World institutions blindly support human greed. Global concerns are robbing natural resources, which
have been with us for thousands of millions years.
- Market mechanisms make firms exploit natural resources especially in places, where there is the cheapest
workforce, the softest environmental laws and the worst social environment for the population.
