WITNESS (www.witness.org) uses video and online technologies to open the
eyes of the world to human rights violations. WITNESS empowers people to
transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools for justice,
promoting public engagement and policy change. WITNESS envisions a just,
equitable world in which all individuals and communities are able to defend
and uphold their human rights.
WITNESS embodies the values of partnership, shared learning, and
adaptability in the face of change. The approach reflects WITNESS's
commitment to catalyzing change, and its knowledge that real impact comes
from igniting the power, passion and potential of individual activists and
frontline human rights organizations. Only by taking risks, responding to
local needs, and bringing together various perspectives can WITNESS
revolutionize global human rights. Guiding WITNESS's work is its commitment
to an open-source philosophy. WITNESS embraces a growth strategy focused on
the broad, non-proprietary dissemination of its methodology. WITNESS
encourages others to use and adapt its model for building video advocacy.
This means sharing innovations through partnering, distributing resources
freely, and relying on open-source technology and Creative Commons licensing
to ensure access.
WITNESS's goal is to fully align its practices with the
principles it fights for, and to pursue strategies with the greatest
leverage in promoting systemic social change.
