Music Partysans / Muzyczna Partyzantka

Miroslaw Dembinski / 2007 /52 min.

In the situation so far described, Rock music plays an interesting role in Belorus. It expresses young people’s hopes for freedom not only in a social context, as is generally the case in other countries, but also in a political one. Belorusian youth rebels not only against general social conventions, but also against the Lukashenka regime. The lyrics of modern Belorusian songs, refer, on the one hand to native traditions, and are on the other a conscious provocation directed to the government, which promotes the theory that only peasants and the opposition speak Belorusian. The officially forbidden white-red-white flag and outburst of “Belorus is alive” can often be seen and heard at concerts.
